The Weekend in Review...

Daily Photo: Bonfire at DADSTOCK  (Courtesy Of Steve Serres)

Friday

Friday was probably one of the worst days I have had in a very long time.  Having to say goodbye to a best friend was just awful.  If you have never been a pet person it is hard to understand.  Sebastion was my friend and he would do anything for our family.  To have him not being able to walk, eat or do much of anything was difficult for me to see.   I am glad I was there for him in the end, but at the same time seeing him go will haunt me forever.  He is now in Doggie heaven chasing after his old pal Raggles...

Saturday

Went to DADSTOCK!!!  Ate too much, Drank too much and had a fantastic time.  The bonfire was so large and hot it was tough to be within 30 feet of it.  A day of drinking and chatting with other Dads was a welcome get away.  And NO I was not driving... Thanks again STEVE!!!  While I was gone the kids visited Grandma and Grandpa and the wife took the older boys to Six Flags Great America.  They had a long and exciting day as well.

Sunday

Hang Over and Yard Work.  I woke up feeling the effects of too many beers and too much RUM!  I spent the day fighting the rain while I did house and yard work.  The wife too the kids to some friends for the afternoon while I cut the grass, trimmed the bushes hit Home Depot and Menards, Added a shelf next to the loft bed in the boys room.  I think the only negative is I spent a long time alone with my thoughts which were focuses on one thing only.

The 5

  1. Hybrid Escape - Steve drives a Hybrid Ford Escape and is what we took to Dadstock.  It is the strangest thing to be sitting at a stop sign and it sounds like the car is off.  I had fun playing with the computer seeing our MPG as we went.

  2. New TV - We have been looking at getting a new TV for the family room and just pulled the trigger last night.  After doing a TON of research we were set on a Samsung LN40A650 40-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV I looked around and did research and found that AMAZON had the best price for the TV I wanted as well as FREE SHIPPING and no sales tax... Saved a FEW hundred bucks!  It has a 40" screen which will just fit in the sold wood entertainment center and all the features we wanted.

  3. Too Sad - Friday was really a dark day.  I miss my good friend and keep looking for him during the day.  I have also used the plural when asking about our little dog "Frodo"

  4. Aussie - Well we look like we will be approved to be a home for a rescued Australian Shepard.  We had talked about a puppy, but felt that with the current ages of the kids and complete lack of time that a puppy would be way too much for use to deal with. Here is to hopefully finding an Aussie in need.

  5. New Microwave - Not only did we buy a new TV, but we HAVE to get a new microwave oven.  Our trusty little one died.  Luckily I do not use it for much so I only need about a 1.1 cu ft one.  Going CHEAP!

Like Herding Cats...

Daily Picture: McHenry Marlins Swim team Logo

My 7yo son is a member of the team and in his first year.  He is on the Second Team 8yo and Under.  This is his first real swimming other then basic lessons through the park district.  He has improved dramatically these past few weeks.

Like Herding Cats...

Tonight was another swim meet and I volunteered to be in charge of gathering the kids 8 and under and getting them to where they needed to be.  First we need to find them all and then of course get them to the right lanes and races all while races of different ages are going on all around us.  With the younger kids it truly is like herding cats.  You think you have them all and then one is gone.  Collect them back from their parents and another is missing.  Once they get into place we also need to remind them what stroke and distance over and over and over again.  There is so much going on and so many kids moving in different directions it is amazing anything gets done.  Then of course there is the wild card with the little kids when they get tired... They won't get into place.  The coaches, parents and friends cheer them on, but they refuse to get into the water.  Tonight's meet was at a private country club and another Dad and I could only think about Caddy Shack and Caddy Day at the pool.  It was an average club and the pool as a true swim pool was not too good.  I could just see some guys looking at the pool from the greens going they let these people in here...  Overall the meet was pretty good and the little ones tried really hard.  I can just see in a few year my son looking like a pro.

The 5

  1. Jumper - Watched that off and on today and it was not too bad.  The effects were cool and the actors overall were not too bad.   I actually liked the concept and of course Samuel L Jackson is "Bad Motherf*****"...

  2. 10,000 BC - This one is next up.  It looks cool, but the review I have read are rather poor.

  3. Mr Mouthy - 7yo has really begun to push it lately.  Today I was talking to the baby and he said in a very snobby tone... "Dad, Ah He Can't Understand What You Say!"  I said I was aware of that and... then he interupts and repeats his comment.  I silenced him and said in a very matter of fact tone that he may not be able to understand what your saying, but he understands I am talking to him.  I just about lost it today...

  4. Little Kids, High Blocks - The starting blocks at the meet tonight were really high and seeing the little kids on them was rather interesting.  Many chose to go from the side since the height was a little much.

  5. Sebastion still here - Well the Vet said about a week and we are at two weeks now.  He is just starting to act off and not eating.  I can not imagine he will be able to get through the week.  If he is still happy and not showing signs of dispare or problems we will let him ride it out.  He has been enjoying long days on the patio looking over the yard.

The Daily Intake

Well today was still a bit odd since I have not been too hungry with recovering from the Flu.

  • Breakfast: Meal Replacement Shake.  Men's Health has nothing but good things to say about Shakes and Smoothies

  • Lunch: Light Tortilla Pizzas.  Little 8" shells with a small amount of sauce and cheese.  When they are done they are kind of like warm chips.

  • Snacks: Granola Bars and Granola Breakfast Cookie (Snacked while at swim meet walking the deck)

  • Dinner: Bowl of Chrispex Cereal with Skim Milk.  9:00 PM after the meet.

  • Other: 32 Ounces of Green Gatorade.  While walking around in the sun for three hours I had some Gatorade on hand.  With the sun and warm temps mixed with walking the pool deck for three hours it was well needed.

Weight Loss

Reading a few other Dad blogs and a desire to get back in shape has inspired me to create a special page just for my weight loss efforts.  So I guess today is the first day of the rest of my life, or something like that.  When I went into the Hospital a few weeks ago I was 269 pounds OUCH!  After being sick for 10 days I dropped down to about 258. So now the true test begins with some minor and major goals set with regular weigh ins.  I have been down this road before, but after breaking my elbow and having tendon surgery I put on a bunch of weight.  My lightest as an adult was 217 pounds around when my second son was born almost 4 years ago which was down from my heaviest of 275.  So I have a new tab (at the top of the page) that will track my progress along with regular posts on how I am doing.  It will contain my goals and weigh ins as I atempt to get back into a shape other then round.  I am also going to add a section like the 5 that includes what I have had for the day titled "The Daily Intake" this will help me keep track and keep me honest.  Not only will I have to keep records for myself, but records for my blog forcing me to remember.  So at the end of the day when I post I will have the "The Daily Intake" as a special feature.

A few years ago I got involved with Weight Watchers, but only by myself and I did not do the meetings.  I have no time for that and it was successfull until I started eating really badly after the problems I had.  So after years of being a rollercoaster I am going to try this again.  I am basically following the WW plan, but with some modifications that I have found important in my overall diet.  LEIN PROTEIN will be king...

So here is to a NEW BEGINNING!

Down for the Count

Daily Picture: Baby in High Chair.

Tried out the High Chair today and he was having a good old time.  A bit of a lean though...

Saturday Nights Alright

Saturday Night we had a neighbor couple and their two boys over for Dinner.  Well the adults had dinner while the 4 picky boys played like wild boys in the back yard.  I grilled up some nice New York Strips, Homemade Salsa, Fruit, Corn Bread and a nice Ceasar Salad.  The Beer on tap was Goose Island Summertime.  We had a wonderful time just hanging out while the boys played and played and played.  By the end of the evening too much food was consumed and 4 boys were wiped out.  We plan on doing this a bit more often switching houses and every third time go out without the kids.  Should be fun...

The Old Switch-A-Roo

When the baby was born we decided to move the two older boys soon to be 8 and 4 into a room together.  We have a 4th bedroom in the basement, but 8yo is not ready for that.  So since there are only 3 upstairs bedrooms we thought that having the two older boys share for a couple years would be a good thing.  Well as it turns out it has been a bit of a bust.  7 yo (8) has been struggling since his brother wakes him up all the time and he has no private space.  The other issue is with bedtime, 3yo might need to go to bed earlier, but it becomes difficult to have two different bedtimes when they share a room.  This weekend this private space came to a head when 7yo had a total breakdown with his brother not letting him be alone for even a minute.  So after discussin it for a while the wife and I have decided to switch the rooms up again. 7yo will get the small room that is currently the babies room and the baby will share with 3yo.  This will give 7yo his own room and 3yo kind of his own room.  Currently the baby sleeps in our room and will more then likely nap in our room so 3yo can have full access to the room during the day.  So now we have to do a little painting and decorating as well as make 3yos room a little more special.  In a way he is excited, but he is also sad his big brother is moving out.  This will be an interesting move and then when 7yo is ready he can move to the basement room and we will switch up the other rooms for the younger boys.  At times I wish we had another bedroom upstairs, but in reality we do not need it.  We have plenty of space and to get something bigger now to down size later is silly.

Down for the Count

Yesterday afternoon I all of a sudden had a headache, stomach ache and fever...  A few neighbors had the Flu a little while back an I was around them.  With my system beat down I am sure it was not hard for me to catch something.  Well by the early evening I could not stay warm and was sweating.  I had a rather tough night, but by this evening I feel at about 80%.  I really, really need to stop with this sick and hurt stuff.  If I was a horse I would be glue...

The 5

  1. Borrowed XBOX 360 - My Brother In Law is letting me borrow his XBOX 360 for a couple weeks.  He let me borrow a bunch of games as well and I had a peak at a few tonight.

  2. Guitar Hero III - Neighbor let me borrow Guitar Hero III and I played for a bit tonight.  It really is just the old game SIMON with a rock beat.  It is however an entertaining way to waste time

  3. Games - HALO 3, Call of Duty 4, BIOSHOCK, GEARS of WAR, ASSASSINS CREED, TOMB RAIDER, BLUE DRAGON, DEVIL MAY CRY, SKATE, FATAL INERTIA

  4. Neighbor Offer - My neighbor in passing said he would sell my his 360 since he does not play it.  He has 360, PS3, Wii so he has a ton on his plate.  He likes to buy the latest thing then gets bored quickly.  Might have to see what he wants for it... Then somehow have the wife think it is a good thing... : )

  5. Brother In Law and Brother - Both have the Wii and 360 so I rarely have to buy games.  If I were to get a 360 I would have a library of games that I could borrow... Hmmmm

Zoo Are You... Zoo, Zoo, Zoo, Zoo

Daily Picture: Elephant at the Milwaukee Zoo

This picture took me 5 or 6 times to actually get with the ears out.  I love Digital Cameras!

The Zoo Trip

We typically go to the zoo at least once a summer and this year we did it on the first day of summer.  The wife took the day off and not only did we have one more in our family, but we had my son's friend that is with us on Fridays.   So the wife and I were going around the Zoo with 4 boys which was a lot of fun, but amazingly tiring.  The funny thing is my oldest is about a head shorter then his friend and his friend has the same hair cut and similar look to my boys.  I am sure people thought we had four boys... Not a bad thing, but I can not get credit for four boys, just three.  We left a little later then usual with swim practice, but made pretty good time to the Zoo even with one stop to feed the baby.  While mom fend the baby in the back of the van the other 3 boys and I took a bathroom break and I treated them to Fries at McDonald's.

Once at the Zoo 3yo only wanted to go the the Fish and Reptile house while 7yo just wanted the open aviary.  Well they both had to wait we went through the Apes and Monkeys first.  Of course with the day we had plenty of LOOK LOOK and WAIT WAIT, but all the boys were very well behaved.  The boys of course loved the petting zoo and they Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches They loved to touch them and it was a true highlight for the boys.  After that we went to the Bird Show and even with the bright sun the boys had a good time watching the birds and especially seeing the Bald Eagle up close.   I also got a special treat when I was included in the show.  I got to hold a bottle for a Raven to fly over take and drop in a recycling bin.  At the end of our day we stopped and the final exhibit for the Sting Ray and Sharks.  There was a large pool with the rays that the kids could reach in and touch them as they floated and "flew" by.

By the end of the day everyone was really tired and had a great time.   The Zoo is always a fun trip for everyone and even as the kids get older they find more and more ways to enjoy going.

Suppppper Duppppper Pooooooper...

Daily Picture: DADSTOCK 2007... (DADSTOCK 2008 is 10 Days away...)

Well the baby is following in the footsteps of 3yo and Dad with his amazing ability to poop!  In two days he has gone so much in one diaper that he has hit two outfits.  Nothing like picking up the baby and having an arm full of nasty warm baby poop...   Then of course that baby poop is like toxic waste and gets everywhere.  Trying to get a little boy out of a Onesy with poop on it is also a big challenge.

Practice and Play Dates

3yo pretty much plays with a couple little kids while his brother is at swim practice.  He played with two little girls at practice and then came home and had a Play Date with a neighbor.  By bedtime he was rather tired and worn out.

Happy Birthday Mr. Phillip!!!

Well one of my closest friends and the friend I have known the longest just caught up to me on age.  So HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY FRIEND... I know your much better half reads this...

The 5

  1. Bike Ride - Was back on the saddle again today and testing out the comfort or discomfort level of riding with a hernia.  I really wish I had a recumbent to help with the strain.  I did ride for more then 30 minutes, but it was a little more uncomfortable then it should be.

  2. Bourne Movies - Rumor has it that there is officially a 4th installment coming soon.  I am excited since the series is a favorite of mine.  I never read the books, but the cold war era stuff really does not interest me.

  3. Spelling and Grammar Part II - Well I know I make mistakes when I blog, but I really do not proof read.  I like to write and write as I think and on a rare occasion I will go back.  I do know the correct grammar most of the time, but having 3 kids and the wife I find myself being drawn and quartered by busy days.  Writing after a day with 3 kids should be an Olympic event.

  4. Swimsuit - 7yo's Swim Team Jammer came in today.  He was so excited he had to try it in out pool.  They are like bike shorts for swimming.

  5. Small World - While at the pool today an older swimmer was trying to get kids to try out water polo.  Turns out the guy is a friend of my brothers and played with him in College.

Two Carts At Costco

Daily Picture: Costco Lake Zurich, IL Google Maps Street View...

Google Maps Street View is rather cool.  Slowly, but surely we will be able to see the world without leaving our homes... Is that a good thing?  It is great when looking for an address or building because you know what it looks like ahead of time.

Costco Trip

Well today was my monthly pilgrimage to Costco and it had actually been a couple months.  I had my normal needs, plus additional items and special items.  The 3 boys and I managed our way in and we had one cart.  Quickly I realized I would need a second cart to hold the bulk paper products along with a bunch of other stuff.  So we headed back to the front and grabbed a second cart that 7yo was in charge of.  He did really well for a while, but once there was mounds of stuff he would push as I pulled it.  We had some good finds including additional beach towls, two rafts for the pool and vacation and a hydration pack for 7yo for our soon to be weekend rides.  Dragging two carts around it became very clear that when I checked out it was going to be pricy!  Yep! nearly 3 times my normal monthly trip... Granted I did not go last month and probably will not make it next month at this point.  Nothing like spending a bunch of money then spending forever unloading and putting away the spoils of my Costco Trip.

Schedule...Hah whats that?

Attempting to schedule myself a bit better.  With my major health hit past me it is time to get my life back in to some kind of order.  I have the alarm set, items planned and of course my daily exercise in the schedule.  I am not very good with schedules, but I will need to work harder at it.  With number 3 now it is that much harder to just wing it.

The 5

  1. Spelling and Grammar - For the most part I try to keep that straight, but since I have not had tome to proof read I am sure there are some grammar errors floating around.  If I had taken the time to look back I would have found them.  So if you see some feel free to comment, but remember some days I am just happy to be able to think like an adult much alone write like one.

  2. Blog Roll - I have been working hard to get it all finished up, but I am sure I have lost a few people blogs along the way.  Give me a shout and I will fix that

  3. Friday Zoo Trip - This Friday we are heading out to the Milwaukee Zoo.  It is a favorite of mine as well as easily traveled by the little ones.

  4. Bedtime - Trying for an actual bedtime.  We shall see how well it work for me.

  5. Odd Weather - It has been rather a cool start to the warm season as well as too much rain.  I have not had issues with flooding, but the river is only a few miles away and is off limits to boating right now.  The levels are cresting right at the shore height...

Swim Team Practice, Home, Swim Meet...

Daily Picture: Sebastion is still with us... Happy

Swimming

I think I should of just stayed at the pool tonight.  We were at practice this morning, but the little kids had a dry land practice since the temps were a bit on the cold side.  Tonight was a swim meet and of course my son swam in events #4, #44, #56, #76... Spread those out and keep us late.   Tomorrow we have to be at the pool 45 minutes early for team pictures.  So I am practically living at the pool.  On the plus side we are making some new friends which helps the time go by.

The 5

  1. The Search - With the pending family trauma we have focused the family energy on the future.  The boys and I want a puppy this time around, not that shelter dogs are a problem, but 3 shelter dogs to 1 puppy is not a bad ratio.  We have looked at all sorts of dogs and I am partial to the Australian Shepard, especially the TRI color...  The patterns are similar to Sebastion.

  2. Swim Meets - They are long and at times somewhat confused.  I just wish they had the little ones finish up a bit sooner.

  3. Costco - I need a major Costco Visit this week and will probably be spending just a bit.  Need to stock up on those dry goods and some cleaning supplies.  Plus a few fun items...

  4. Fussy Baby - This morning baby was up really early and had a difficult time napping.  Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day for him.

  5. SLEEP!!! - Off to do that!

Teenage Mutant Painted Turtle...

Daily Picture: Painted Turtle Found in the Back Yard.

This morning as I walked around opening the blinds I looked out the kitchen window to see something walking across the back yard.  After watching it for a second I noticed it was a Turtle!  I called for the boys who have learned to come RUNNING when dad says check this out.  We went out back and sure enough there was a painted Turtle in my FENCED backyard.  It must have found a way under the fence, but he was along way from wetlands.  With all the rain I have been seeing turtles all over the place.  The boys and I caught him and placed him in the bucket until we could walk the 1/4 mile to the pond and wooded area.  Once we got him there he seemed thrilled to jump into the pond and chase some minnows.  For living in a cookie cutter subdivision we actually see a lot of wild life.  Song Birds, Swallows, Robins, HAWKS, Coyotes, Deer, Frogs, Rabbits, Toads, Turtles, Owls, Bats... I saw a hawk take out a small bird between the houses...  BAM! a streak and floating fluff...

The Incredible Hulk

Yesterday two of my Brother In Laws and I went to see the Incredible Hulk at the First AM showing.  We had a great time and the movie was very entertaining.  I actually liked how they pulled the mythology from the comics and the TV show giving a general feel for the origins while making their own story.  The HULK fights were spectacular and when he yelled "HULK SMASH" that was great...  If you are a geek like me I would recommend watching the movie.  Lots of mindless entertainment and pretty darn good acting.

Swim Team

7yo is having a blast on the swim team and tomorrow night is another 3-4 hour meet.  So after the wife gets home I will be heading out with 7yo so he can go through the meet.  He is not a super fast swimmer, but he has learned so much in the past few weeks.  In the end he will only be a better swimmer because of it.

Soccer

3yo started soccer tonight.  I was at home working while mom took him to soccer.  He had a great time and a few of his friends are also involved.  He needs something that he keeps moving and moving...

The 5

  1. Battlestar Galatica - The half way point or Mid Season Finale happened Friday.  Again it was well done, but a little torn about some of the things that have happened.  Still waiting for the 5th to be revealed.

  2. Hernia Repair Postponed, maybe - If I can hold out I think I am going to try for the fix over the holidays when the wife will be off for a couple weeks.  Holidays on Pain Meds... Joy to the World...

  3. Sebastion - He is still with us and still doing OK.  He is happy for the most part and enjoying a ton of time in his favorite spot in the back yard.  I do not know how much time he has, but he will be 100% happy until then.

  4. Scrapped Knee - Today on the way back from letting the turtle go 7yo tripped and scrapped up his right knee pretty good.  A little First Aid and care and he was better.

  5. Six Flags Great America - The Father IN Law gets us all Season Passes as our "Gift" for the year.  We went over the weekend and 3yo actually was excited and went on 4 rides.  YEAH!!! We plan on going weekly for the summer while mom is at work and then a few times at nights or the weekends with mom.

Start of Daddy Daycare and Severe Storms

Daily Picture: My Road in California  (Thanks Yakataq)

My friend has sent this picture to me before, but seeing it again makes me laugh.

Daddy Day Care

Well today was the first Friday of the summer that I have an extra kid around.  Every Friday a friend of 7yo's is staying with us while his parents are at work.   They typically work different schedules, but Fridays are not working so for the summer we have a built in play date.

Severe Storms

Last night after midnight I was woken up by loud rain hitting the house.  I dozed off again and was woken up by the wife.  She asked if I heard the sound... I get up and listen... CRAP! Down to the basement, the Tornado Sirens were going off and the wind was picking up.  Wife grabs the baby and we rush to wake the boys... and headed for shelter.  On the way down I grabbed the diaper bag and tried to convience the dogs to follow.  They took their time, but the rest of us were down in the basement taking shelter from the storm.  The sirens went for a while and then stopped.  I went to check the weather and the sirens began again and this time stayed on for a long time.  We spent and hour and a half in the basement waiting for the storm to pass.  It was nice that the basement is finished so we were at least comfortable hiding out.

Magic The Gathering

I have been looking to relive some of my gaming habits and show my 7yo what I used to play along time ago.  I was a big Magic Player and had probably 60,000 cards including the "Power 9" which I sold and gave away a long time ago to.  The sale of the big cards made it possible for us to have a down payment on our first house.  I have put out the word to a few people that I am looking for "UNWANTED" magic cards so I can share the game with my sons.  I am not looking to spend money and really not interested in the big cards, just the Commons, Uncommons and basic rares.  I have found a few people that have some stuff in storage and hopefully this summer I will be able to relive the good old days.  So if anyone out there has some cards floating around I would give them a good home as well as pay for shipping.  "I AM A GAMER, HEAR ME ROLL FOR INITIATIVE"

The 5

  1. Games - I Love games and have been looking to play many of the old favorites.  I still have many of them, but would love to get back playing Magic with my son.

  2. Flood Watch - All the areas here are being hit hard with the rain.  Heck a man made lake in the Wisconsin Dells was washed away...  I am a few miles from the FOX RIVER and it is rising rather quickly...

  3. Busy - It has been so busy lately.  I have been going to Dr's for me and the kids as well as all over the place for this and that.  Hopefully soon I can have some kind of order to my life.

  4. The Golden Compass - I just finished the Audio Book and it was pretty good.  There are some themes that some organizations have been upset with, but overall the book was enjoyable FICTION!  As for the MOVIE that was pretty much garbage compared to the movie.  Stuff was out of order and the movie was just plan weak.  Next up... "The Subtle Knife" the second book in the series.

  5. The Hulk - Looks like I will be going to see that Sunday with two of my Brother In Laws.  A good time out for the guys...

Losing a Best Friend..

Daily Picture: My Dying Friend... Sebastion

The past month has seen a dramatic decline in the health of one of the family pets Sebastion a 12.5 Year Old mixed breed saved from a shelter.  Over the years he went from the hyper crazy young dog to the calm good dog he is today.  He has been a devoted and loyal companion, but time is not on his side.

He had been having troubles and after some test we found out his Kidney's were failing.  After a follow up and further complications we found out his organs are filling with fluid from fatty tumors in his body.  The Vet estimates a week or so at the most.  We are hoping he goes on his terms at home, but will not let his last days be in torment if the decision needs to be made.

A Prayer Given to me from a friend...

IF IT SHOULD BE

If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand.
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years.
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so;
The time has come -- please let me go.

Take me where my need they'll tend,
And please stay with me till the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Please do not grieve -- it must be you
Who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years;
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

In the end he has been a true and loyal friend.  His life started out difficult, but he found a family and in then end lead a happy healthy life...

Here's to our friend... Sebastion!

Trying to Play Catch Up...

With my wonderful vacation at the hospital and of course the follow ups to that I am finding it really difficult to catch up.  It seems everything is against us and the hours in the day just speed away.  Still recovering while doing too many things makes it difficult to find the time to blog, especially when falling asleep sitting up.

I would love to say my week has improved, but it has not.  Too much to do and other issues keep popping up.  With swimming, Dr appointments for myself, the dog and my oldest son it feels like I go from 8:00 - 5:00 in the blink of an eye.

The 5

  1. Hospital Stays - What a tough thing.  At your worst and they are more worried about the insurance then the people in their care

  2. Holy Pool - The pool sprung a leak... Luckily the underwater patch works really well.  Just did not like having to jump in to fix.

  3. Swim Meets - Learned the hard way how long swim meets are, even for a 7 year old.

  4. Booked Summer - Between the hospital stay, swimming, football, vacation and every possible family event we have a very packed summer.

  5. Flooding - The entire area is having problems with flooding.  We have been lucky here, but I am far enough away from water and up high enough.

Hospital Mistreatment...

When you have to be hospitalized you need to feel comfortable relying on others. Being brought into the hospital can be a nervous, scary and sometimes even lonely experience that can create discomfort and even confusion. We rely on the health care professionals to put our health and best interest first, but what happens when they don't? I would love to say that it is rare that a health care professional or facility causes a problem or makes mistakes, but the fact is it happens all too often. During my recent hospitalization when I was at my most vulnerable the hospital staff failed me causing emotional and physical distress.

Going To The Hospital

I was admitted to the hospital late Tuesday night after seeing my Doctor and being sent to the emergency room. The hospital had been rather crowded so when I was finally admitted I ended up in the cardiac ward in a private room for the night. While in the ER I was given an IV with Antibiotics as well as the medication Dilaudid for the pain. I am ultra sensitive to narcotic pain medication so once given to me I am dazed and confused beyond what the average person feels. Everything seemed to be going well and more tests were planned for the following day. Early Wednesday morning I was seen by my Doctor as well as a surgeon about my hernia since much of the pain I felt was in the area of my recently diagnosed hernia. The Doctors eliminated the hernia as the cause for the other symptoms and further tests were ordered for the day.

Being Lost, Confused and Forgotten

At this point things began to go in a bad direction eventually leading to an unfortunate confrontation. My wife and family were unable to be with me too much during the day Wednesday so I was under the care of the hospital while under the influence of the Dilaudid. Around 1:00 I was medicated again and told I was going to be moved to a different room in the regular ward of the hospital. I had not eaten in more then 24 hours and the Dilaudid hit me hard causing me to struggle to breath as well as have naseua and dizzyness. Moments later a person (Later I figured out she was a Reverend from the hospital) walked in and noticed my distress and contacted the nurses. In what seemed to me a blur of activity a group of people were around me putting stuff into my IV and giving me oxygen. Dazed, confused and feeling ill I was moved to a room in the regular ward with a room mate. Once in the room I did not see nurses for hours as well as never given a straight answer to any of my questions, and was in the dark about my treatment and health. I was told by the nurses that I was going to have a colonoscopy and that the Dr was going to see me soon about the procedure. Hours rolled by without a Dr visit or a straight answer to my questions so I REFUSED the pain medication in order to clear my head and focus on what was going on. In the early evening my wife arrived to find me still a bit confused trying to ignore my very troubled room mate. After talking to me as well as the current nurse that had been ignoring me my wife realized something was not right. She demanded the nurse contact my Doctor as well as the Doctor that apparently was going to do the colonoscopy. After we both spoke to them we got straight answers and knew what the next steps were supposed to be. The nurses had been saying the GI Dr was going to visit me all day, however he never indicated this and even told them he was on rounds at a different hospital some 50 miles away.

The Confrontation

Before my wife left for the night she expressed concern to me about my room mate. He was a nice older man, however he seemed to be suffering from some kind of dementia as well as a number of other issues. He would start to yell, scream and demand help at the drop of the hat about everything. At 10:00 I tried to sleep, but he was having some issues which required the help of multiple techs and nurses so I went down to the computer room and Blogged the previous post. As I wondered to the computer areas I mentioned to the nurses that the troubles my room mate was having would probably be an issue. They supposedly made an attempt to find a different room for me, but in the end said I would have to stay there. They offered me head phones and advice to understand sometimes room mates can be noisy. I agreed, but said that he seems to be having more issues. The nurses said as soon as they got him settled for bed it would be quiet and I would have no more problems. 12:00 he is up yelling for the nurses, but no one comes. In his confused state he was unable to use the call button. I called for the nurses and they came and tried to settle him down. Over the next two hours he yelled for the nurses, yelled at me and made it impossible for me to even attempt to sleep. At about 2:00 after his most recent screaming session I told the nurses I could not do this, they needed to find me a new room so I could actually sleep. My nurse did a few things and came back to me with what appeared to be new bed linens and asked me to follower her. I asked her about my stuff and she said not to worry about it that was still my room. A little confused I asked where we were going. Her response still echoes in my head... "Oh we are going to have you sleep down here on a couch" I stared at her for a second and she said there was a couch I could sleep on for the next few hours while they tried to find a room and bed for me. Understand it is 2:00 in the morning, I have not slept at all and I have prep for a test at 6:00 a.m. She looked at me like I was crazy for not jumping at the opportunity to sleep on a couch that was going to be way too small for my nearly 6'3" body. I told her and I quote "I AM NOT SLEEPING ON A F*CKING COUCH!" She said well that is all I can do for you. After having the hours of being in the dark about my own medical care I had had enough. I told her if she could not find me a BED to sleep in I was going to leave. She said she had no other options all the while my room mate was still yelling about something. I told her fine, remove the IV check me out and I am going home. She refused to do that and so I began to get angry. I DEMANDED my IV removed or I would do it and called my father to come get me. They complied with my demands as not 1, not 2, but 4 security guards arrived on floor. While the IV was removed the nurse contacted my Doctor and told her I was upset about my room mate and not about the offer of the couch. After the nurse spoke to my doctor my doctor wanted to speak to me. She told me that leaving was against her recommendations and it would not be a good idea. At this point I told her the ENTIRE story and that the nurse wanted me to sleep on the couch basically for the rest of the night. At this point my Doctor paused and said they told you what? I said they wanted me to sleep on the couch for the rest of the night... At this she wanted to speak to the nurse again... Within seconds she was transferred to the hospital administrator. Moments later the administrator was in the nurses station with us. She repeated the line of the nurse that there were no BEDS available so I repeated my line of fine I will go home and sleep in my bed. She said that if I left the insurance would not cover my stay and I would be left with a bill. I said that's fine because if I left my first call would be to my LAWYER! With this she got on the phone and what do you know found a few beds!!! While she was on the phone I told the "Donut Patrol" the security guards that was as wide as tall that I was not going to do something crazy. They said they just wanted me to be a little quieter. I said I would try, but when a nurses' solution to the sleeping arrangements is for me to sleep on a couch I think I have a right to be unhappy. I ended up staying in a ROOM in the ER overflow area. She made the comment that there were no private bathrooms and I said I did not care. She was worried about me having a bathroom, but was fine with me sleeping on a couch. With this my father arrived and we went with the administrator to the ER while my father ripped her a new one about offering to put me on a couch. Once in the ER overflow area which by the way was 200 times nicer then the regular rooms I was set up and the administrator kissed up for a little while. They had to put a new IV in, but I did not care, honestly I was so mad that I did not even feel it. Once set up the nurse contacted my Doctor for instructions and then my Doctor spoke with me. I told her I was sorry she was woken for this, but the situation was just plain ridiculous. She said she was sorry this happened and let me know about her conversation with the administrator. She apparently said this was a problem and that if it was not resolved it would not end with just me. She would no longer refer anyone to the hospital as well as make sure every doctor she knows would have the details of the situation. Again in the end my Doctor was looking after me. Through this whole ordeal she was the only health care professional looking out for me. From my visit to her office, the time in the ER and seeing me at the hospital she was 100 percent behind me. She has a patient for life.

The Aftermath

After the whole ordeal the ER nurse was extremely nice and made sure I was comfortable and not disturbed. I had tests and thing to be done at 5:00 and 6:00, but she had them move them to 7:00 in order to allow me to get some rest. I ended up having a colonoscopy scheduled for sometime before 10:00 and I had an entire entourage with me for the morning. There were 3 nurses, the GI Dr and the HEAD anesthesiologist. The head anesthesiologist said he normally is not involved, but that apparently there was a problem last night and this is a special case. Now I did not ask for the special treatment, only respectful treatment. If the night before the Nurses had be more helpful this would never have been an issue. If they had recognized my room mates issues a head of time they would not have allowed anyone to be in the same room.

In the end I had the worst experience at the hospital with about a 12 hour period when I felt the nurses were ignoring me, mistreating me and basically caring more about what they did the day before then the people under their care and supervision. At this point I am still really upset and am trying to figure out where to go from here...

I am just happy to be HOME!

Advocate Good Shepard Hospital, shame on you and your "4 East" wing...

Second Night in the Hospital...

Last night I got lucky with over flow to be put in the cardiac ward and have my own room.  Tonight I am not so lucky and have a loud roommate and some machines making a lot of noise.  I will be having a procedure in the morning so now I get to try to sleep in a noisy room with the joys of thinking about a procedure in the morning.  So right now I am hiding out in the lounge sitting on the computer.

My wife has been here 3 times with the boys and never had any trouble.  That being said I was a bit frustrated by early this afternoon.  Unfortunately do to all sorts of circumstances I was alone all day with no "Advocate" here on my behalf.  I have never done well with the pain meds and I get a bit more confused then the average person does.  So after my post early today I went back to my room and was actually in a bit of pain so they dosed me again.  The only problem with this was I had had nothing to eat in basically 24 hours.  The pain meds hit me bad.  As I sat there someone walked in and when they saw me they asked if I was alright.  Apparently my answer was no because within no time there were 3 nurses surrounding me giving me O2 as well as pumping in some nausea meds.  The lack of food and my low tolerance for hard medications threw me for a loop.  Looking back up to that point I was very impressed with everything...  Well thats where my day went a bit downhill.  I was told I was going to have another CT scan and see a GI Doctor in the afternoon, I think... I was still pretty high so I was having difficulties understanding everything that was going on.  The next thing I know I am being wheeled up to a different room and from 1:00pm until 7:00pm I was pretty much in the dark on what was going on.  I refused anymore pain meds so I could clear my head and my wife was finally able to make it in.  At this point we contacted our doctor as well as had the GI Dr call us.  So after finally having a clear head and being able to have the wife also confirm everything we were a bit happier.

With so much going on with the families my wife had to stay with the boys.  I think my day would have been better if there was someone here that could have helped me out while I was dazed and confused.  Tomorrow for the procedure SOMEONE will be here to be an advocate for me.

While I was coming down off the meds this afternoon I felt rather alone and confused.  The nurses did not catch my confusion because I guess I can hide my high very well to strangers.  When I spoke to my wife however she new instantly I was not myself.

I just want to be home with my family...

In the Hospital

Live on location in wonderful Barrington IL at Good shepard hospital.  Yesterday at 11:00am I began to feel extremely sick including issues with the hernia.  I called my Dr and was in the office at 3:00pm.  After a checkup I was sent over to the ER because my symptoms came on so fast and were unusual.  My Hernia hurt bad, but I also had Flu symptoms and a HIGH fever.  So not only did I go to the ER for a battery of tests, but I was checked into the hospital and spent the night under the care of medical professionals.  As of this morning I found out that my White Cell counts were EXTREMELY high and might have an infection in my lower GI tract which is causing my hernia to hurt.  The ruled out hernia complications, but I am in for a day of tests to figure out what has my system going crazy.  I am just happy I have access to a computer in the hospital ward.  The wife is home with the boys and I am sitting in the hospital waiting for more tests and testing the limits of my pain after a night of antibiotics.

I am really sad to be away from my boys.  It is difficult to be here and not be with them.

On the plus side it looks like I will not have to have a consult for the hernia repair since I saw the specialists today.  So once the infection and pain can be figured out I can get that taken care of.

Daily observation:  They want you to recover in the hospital, but wake you up all night...

Swimming Pools, Movies Stars...

Well at least swimming pool...

13 Feet Across and 42 Inches deep currently filled with very cold water.  I spent a good portion of Saturday afternoon putting the pool together and then it took forever to fill.  The build was not too difficult, but just time consuming.

Open Box...

The parts were really packed in tight and I actually did the build without a visit to the Doctors Office.  Well this afternoon after the solar cover had been on all day the boys wanted to try out the pool.  I warned them it would be a couple days before the chill was out of the water.  The said they did not care.  While 7yo was slowly climbing down the ladder I gave him some help and he went in and under.  He was so mad and so cold...  3yo climbed up the ladder, touched the water and decided it was a bit too cold.

Friday Follow-Up

Well I had a follow-up on Friday for the wonderful wood chunk that was pulled out of my hand.  I was actually seeing my Doctor since another Doctor in the practice saw me and took out the wood last Friday.  She took a look at it and said it looked great.  When she asked if I had any concerns about anything I for once actually was in a hurry to answer the question.  I have been feeling a bit "Squeezed" and uncomfortable on my "Left" side.  So I get to drop trow, turn my head and cough.  After inspection and the wonderful hernia test that literally had me on my toes the diagnosis... HERNIA!!!  So I get to have ANOTHER procedure down below.  It is interesting that I now know EXACTLY what they are looking for when they do the test.  Ever since I was younger I never really knew when the hernia test was down EXACTLY what the symptoms were.  Now I know and I wish I did not know.  I need to contact a surgeon tomorrow and get everything set for a repair job.  Then once it is down I can not LIFT or STRAIN at all for a little while.

Sunday Yard Work...

Well today I finished up staining the fort, doing finale touch ups and of course cut the grass.  I was basically going from 8:30-8:30 in the yard and then tonight I hit the grocery store without the kids.  The weeks are looking lighter thankfully, but there will be at least one week when I do almost nothing!

The 5

  1. HERNIA - OUCH!!!

  2. Pool - One more thing off my list to do and one more hazard in my yard for my children.

  3. Swing Set - EVERYTHING is finally done.  I have one more thing I want to do, but it can wait a little while.  I want to put the boys names on the swing set with metal lettering.

  4. Blogging - Been difficult to find the time, but I am guessing very shortly I will have a bunch of time to sit around and type since I will not be able to do much else.

  5. Nanny - Well there is a good possibility that my 14 year old Niece will be coming to help with the kids while I am recovering.  We might even have her stay a few nights so the morning go smoother.

Daily Observation: A Hernia is just one of those things you never quite understand... Until you have one!
