Bike Trail Wildlife...Snakes and FISH!

Today was the perfect day for a ride. When the wife arrived home I got all geared up and went for a nice trail ride on my bicycle. Of course no ride would be complete without some idiot in a car/van/suv either almost hitting me or threatening me in some fashion. I only ride neighborhood streets and trails, however I do need to cross a major road and spend maybe 500 feet in a higher traffic area. I am clipping along at about 15 MPH coming up to the stoplight at the front of my subdivision when it turns green. I watch for the turning traffic and go across obeying traffic laws like a bicycle rider should. As I make it across the light changes and the third car back the driver sticks his hand out the window with one finger uses a sentence enhancer and threatens to kick a donkey... I let out a laugh, repeat the sentence enhancer saluting back and suggest he blows something... All the while laughing at an idiot stuck at a stoplight he was going to be stuck at even if I was in a car. As I ride along I can only wonder why people feel the need to get angry at others for using the roads. Once I get to the park I have worries about water since much of the trail is along the Fox River and a lake. As I ride up the first hill I see something about 2 feet long moving in the sun. It was a monster Garter Snake... If looked at me and kept sunning. I rarely get to see snakes on my rides so it was a treat. The trail looks nice, but I have yet to make it to the lowland areas. As I round a turn into the low land area I notice the trail and paved trail it connects with are underwater. The trial is almost a mirror, yet I can still see the yellow lane markers on the paved trial. Well it was go forward or back the wrong way so I went forward. The water was rather nasty, but clear enough to see fish swimming away from my oncoming wheels. FISH on the bike trail... That is a first for me! I had hoped to get through with just some splashing, but the trail dipped down enough that as my pedal went all the way down it would be underwater... DOH!!! Wet Shoes and Socks! Overall I had a good time and the interesting wildlife made it fun...

I had to do one errand today so we went to the home improvement store to pick up a few items. Afterwards we stop by the library and get a few DVD's then head home. 3yo states he is hungry so I suggest Pizza. He said YEAH with CHEESE! With 7yo the anti-eater it is nice to have someone to share pizza with. The local shop does slices so we went by and picked up two... 3yo ate 1/2 a slice...BIG SLICE!!!

7yo had a friend come over after school and 3yo ran around with them like little wild boys...

The 5
  1. Bike Laws - I find it amazing that the US has so many laws with regards to bicycles, yet most people in cars treat them like criminals. Most countries share the road with bicycles rather well, but here at times it is rather dangerous. Yes some bicyclists do not obey the laws, but that can be said about as many drivers. Just think every bike on the road for transportation does not use gas... Come on SHARE THE ROAD! NEW LAWS...
  2. Mosquitoes - The little vampires are really bad this year. There are a ton of fat birds, dragonflies and bats, but they are still swarming... If I walk out the door after dark I get covered in the little monsters...
  3. $5.60 - The cost of Pizza with 3yo... Having him say thank you this is nummy makes it worth every penny!
  4. Hornets - The little vampires are bad, but the Yellow and Black Devils are a close second. I found a nest in part of my house exterior. I had to get the spray out and take them down. They were so close to the patio it was rather awful. Scratch one Hornet Infestation...
  5. Fish - Did I mention I rode my bicycle with fish today!
Daily Observation: People need to step back and relax. Life is difficult at time and it does not help to ignorant of others.

Child's Play: "Dad, Dad... My Poop is Stuck!" Heard today from 3yo...

More Friends of the Program: Today I actually received emails from SAHD's new to the gig. It is nice to be able to help others in finding support from the online community.

45 Minute Ride, Trailer and Nap...

The sun was shinning bright with a very slight breeze blowing. After we did our morning routine and took 7yo to the bus it was time to get out and ride. With the weather the last couple weeks being really bad and potty training it has been difficult to get out much. I set everything up and got 3yo happy in the trailer. We hit the road and I was hoping for 30 minutes riding. By the 10 minute mark 3yo started to complain a bit. I told him we were going to ride even if he complained. He muttered a few things which I am sure with 3yo for "Kiss My Butt" until at the 20 minute mark he fell silent. I look back to see him slouched over sleeping. I spend the next 25 minutes riding in peace and quiet on a very beautiful day.

As we return and I start putting the bike away he is still asleep. I convert the trailer into a stroller and decide to go for a short walk to let him sleep more. We make it 3 houses to a neighbor friends and he wakes. His little friend is out side so two 3 yos a 1 yo start to play as their mom and I chat for a while. A good time for the boys and some conversation for us with someone over 3...

The rest of the day was fine and we had a good time. 3yo relaxed while I was able to get some work done.

7yo and I had football tonight and we had a scrimmage against one of the other teams. I have been taking on more and more coaching responsibilities as we go along. We are all busy and the two head coaches can not be around all the time. Other family and work responsibilities. The scrimmage is great since each team only has about 15 players making full practices impossible. 7yo was put into a few different positions since 2 main starters we not available tonight. There are plans in the works to get a practice together with just the "LITTLE" guys from each of the 4 teams. One of the coaches will run it on a non practice night just to get the little guys involved and have a chance against others their own size. Each team practices 2 times a week with an optional 3rd. I am excited since all the kids would be able to tackle, block and play with each other.

The 5 (Complaining Edition)
  1. SUV & Cell Phones - After practice each night there are plenty of moms and dads picking up their kids. Too many however are trying to drive WAY TOO FAST and talk on the cell phone in the parking lots. There are hundreds of kids ages 6-14 and this is too dangerous.
  2. Stop Lights - I am never really in a hurry, but the stoplight at my subdivision can be short at times. I have found too many people not paying attention and waiting to go. If the light is green and traffic the other way is stopped it is safe to go.
  3. Speeding - This morning while the boys were playing a young kid drove WAY too fast down the street. 20 MPH is not the same a 40 MPH. Unfortunately I missed the plate. I have seen the car before so I will keep an extra eye out.
  4. Cable Modem - My Comcast connection resets no less then once a week forcing me to reset the modem in order to get a connection. This is even more of an issue when I have VONAGE... Granted most people call my cell
  5. Parking Over the Sidewalk - The is a town ordinance that states you can not park over the sidewalk. When there are parties and other things no one cares. However EVERY DAY is a bit if an issue for me. A house a few doors down has the drive and sidewalk COMPLETELY blocked making the kids have to walk into the street. There is no room between the cars they are packed so tight...
Daily Observation: Too many people are about me and pay little attention to the others around them.

The Grumpy Old AMAM: Lately I have just been so short and grumpy. I am guessing it has to do with my diet change. 20 days and no Caffeine, Soda and Alcohol not to mention more exercise and better food choices... Adjustment period...

Just Call Me Mister Grumpy...

The morning started rather uneventful. I woke 15 minutes before my alarm and was able to get 7yo moving and his lunch packed without a problem. By mid morning it was time for 3yo and I to go to the sports store and get the grocery shopping done. After reviewing my current stocks we were off. We went to Dick's Sporting Goods to pick up a padded chinstrap for 7yo's football helmet. As we were about to leave I hear a little voice... "I need to go potty...NOW!" So we quickly made our way to the very back of the store while 3yo held himself. Close Call, but the big boy was able to go at the store. Once we arrived at Meijer we were greeted warmly and began our shopping. I guess this is were we the morning turned sour. I am by no means a small man, but I find it amazing how so few people actually see me. A lady in a motorized cart spent forever blocking 3 different fruits in the produce section and I ended up getting stuck blocked by her no less then 3 times. People chatting in the aisle as well as walking and not looking. By the time our trip was done and at about $30.00 more then I wanted it was time to get home. We walked outside and were hit with a wall of HEAT!!! The temp had increased dramatically!!!

So by the end of the trip I was very grumpy and unable to shake that feeling all day...

AC back on...
After a few days with no AC the heat and humidity forced us to turn it back on. Even 3yo said he was sticky and hot...

One Final Swim...
The weather is starting to turn and we will be taking down the pop up pool this week. Since it was nearly 90 3yo had a blast swimming without his big brother. He spent nearly an hour jumping around and shooting me with a squirt gun.

Homework Begins...
Well we had our first assignment tonight and all the wonderful paperwork and handbooks. 7yo will have some form of homework EVERY NIGHT... This should be interesting...

Did I Mention Football...
We had our first practice after our disappointing loss on Saturday. The kids seemed to be in good enough spirits. I assist at practice and spent the entire time in the thick if it with the little guys. There are 5 kids that are smaller or not really focused so they really need extra attention and worked in to not get hurt. My son is one of them. He has been playing safety here and there and special teams. Tonight I focused on working with him and a friends son on safety. They will be the safeties now and the boy that was starting has been moved up.

Pee on a Tree!
3yo was swimming again tonight and really had to go... they were not going to make it in the house so he had his first experience of peeing on a tree... Nothing better then peeing on a tree!

The 5
  1. $350,000.00 - The cost of the Lamborghini MurciƩlago Roadster LP640 The Chicago Bear LB Lance Briggs Crashed the other night...Then left the scene...
  2. Cubs in First! - I am not a baseball fan, but the CUBS!!! are still in first place... Next thing you know Pigs will Fly...
  3. Owen Wilson - Was hospitalized for apparently an attempted Suicide. This racks my brain, but I guess he has a history of being depressed. I guess it is true... Money can not by happiness.
  4. $1,000 - The cost of a Super Powered Ride On Toy Jeep... Think Power Wheels meets Barry Bonds... The Super Powered Ride-On tops out at just over 7 miles per hour, though parents can lock its speed at two lower settings if they are worried that's a too fast. The SUV has a horn, a working radio, and even a glove compartment. (Scifi.com)
  5. $30.00 - The amount I went over on my planned grocery trip... DOH! I had a bunch of stuff that is not a weekly purchase to refill. Plus a TON of fresh fruit...
Daily Observation: No matter how hard I try I seem to get stuck between a Shelf and and Old Person at the store...

Child's Play - "See My Butt!" as 3yo Moons Mom and big brother. And NO I did not teach him that!

Today is day 18 of no Soda, Caffeine and Alcohol!!! Could have used all of the above today...

First Day Of School

The alarms go off and everyone is stirring. Today is the first day of school. Both boys were actually up rather early and seemed to be excited. I think 7 yo is a bit ready to go back and 3 yo is just excited that everyone is doing stuff. Breakfast was simple, kids ate without problems and I packed lunch for the wife. Everyone says goodbye to Mom as she heads off to work. Not too long after it is time to get to the bus stop and off to school. 3 yo had a blast at the bus stop, until he remembered what happens. With a sad face 3 yo waves to his big brother on his way to 2nd grade. As we walked slowly back 3 yo in a sad little voice sad "My Mom is gone, Brother is Gone" He spent the next couple hours mopping around muttering under his breath "They Gone" No matter what I tried he was focused on the fact they were gone...

The Laundry Monster was Slain!
The never ending battle against the fierce beast known as the Laundry Monster was pushed in my direction today. The roar echoed through the house and thumps could be felt in the floors. Slowly I worked my way in a with an ambush attack finished all the laundry! By the end of the day I had also put away everything. Once in a great while I am able to fight back at the Laundry Monster.

The 5
  1. Bus Stop - The kids have a blast at the bus stop and for the next couple months it will be a fun and pleasant time. Come the winter cold and the fun will be over.
  2. Rain - Today the thunder could be heard in the distance and small amounts of rain fell destroying our plans of playing at the water park. The last thing we need here is more rain. With a bit of luck the rain barely fell.
  3. Alien vs Predator Requiem - I saw the "Red Band Trailer" today (Rated R Trailer) and it is pretty intense. The first one was rather disappointing yet enjoyable none the less. From everything I had read this one will be extreme action and is out to scare the pants off people. You can see the trailer HERE if you are over 18...
  4. Hero's - I really never got into the show, but with the coming release on DVD I may have to borrow that from the Library.
  5. Schedule - Well with school starting and everything being a bit more scheduled I am hoping to get back on a schedule. Between Work, Housework, 3 yo, Working Out... I need some organization back in my life.
Health Front
  • Today is day 17 of no Soda, Caffeine and Alcohol!!! Feeling great!!!
  • 6 Pounds Down
  • Workout Routine Started
Daily Observation: Kids might not always like school, but in the end they actually look forward to it.

Child's Play:
"They left...Mom and Brother Gone... Arrrrrr"

Overheard: My mother attempting to discuss laundry with my wife...Both of us look at her and say she is the wrong person to talk to.

Our Charlotte The Spider.

This year in late summer we have had an invasion of Orb Weaver Spiders. This is a very large Spider I have named Charlotte. She decided to make her web at our back door a few nights ago and I was able to get this night shot. She is larger then a quarter a brilliant orange and does some pretty amazing web work. She recently moved a little further down after the wife destroyed her web by walking INTO it in the dark. Even tonight she is out there hanging catching some pests...

The boys love to watch her and when she is hiding they want to find her. They are amazed by her web and just missed her actually building the other day. It is very impressive to watch her build her signature web. Yes I like spiders and no we are not afraid of them. They are helpful and not hurtful so they are good to have around...

Last Day of Summer Vacation!

"In the End...There can Be Only One!" Last day of vacation that is. Tomorrow is the day so many parents are excited about and so many children are upset about. School starts tomorrow morning for the 7 yo!

Last Day of Summer Break.
To mark our final day we actually did quite a bit. The boys had a relaxing morning with mom while I cut the grass in the backyard. After that 7 yo and I left for a Car Wash fund raiser for football. We had the 12:00-1:00 time and the kids worked hard, but more importantly had a good time. Soap was every were and the kids had fun making a clean mess. After the car wash which 7yo said was a blast we went to Six Flags and played in the water park for a couple hours. Tomorrow is a half day so the boys and I are going back for a little while in the early afternoon.

Tonight the routine started again and the nights are now returned to the wife and I.

School will be really good for 7 yo since he seems to be have end of summer issues. "I am so bored!" and all the fun attitude that goes along with that. 3 yo I think will be be the most hit by tomorrow. Not only will mom be at work, but big brother will be gone for a 1/2 day. I am going to have to make sure 3 yo stays busy...

The Potty Training Front.
Since Thursday we have only had one accident and that was when he was extremely upset. He went completely bonkers when the wife left with 7 yo for the football game. I have been fighting a bug so I went just before the game and not the warm up. Other then that he has been PERFECT!!! 4 nights with a dry pull up as well. He knows when he has to go and lets us know right away. I am so proud of my little man... I will ask him "Who's the Man?" "I Am The Man" he responds!!!

The 5 (Summer Recap Edition)
  1. DADSTOCK - Had the first annual DADSTOCK at my house. Next year we are planning big and possibly looking for a WINTERFEST to bring the Dads together again!
  2. Swim Lessons - 7 yo loved them and 3 yo made my life extremely difficult. 7 yo passed Level 1 this summer and almost passed Level 2. Next year looks to be rather interesting on that front.
  3. Vacation at a Cabin at a Lake - A vacation that was wonderful for all of us. We had a blast and it was also a great place to have a fun and RELAXING vacation.
  4. Wife's New Job - Her new job is really close and she really enjoys the job and the people. She misses a few people at her old job, but this job is less stressful and so much better for her.
  5. Potty Training Success - 3 yo is now trained and he is loving every minute of it. He likes being the big boy and loves to talk about it. A day without Diapers is like a Walk in the Park...
Daily Observation: People in large crowds have a collective IQ of ZERO!

Child's Play: "Who's The Man?" "I Am The Man!"

On the Health Front
  • Today is day 16 of no Soda, Caffeine and Alcohol!!! Feeling great!!!
  • I poured a Coke for 3 yo on a day of potty training to help things along. I held to my goal and did not touch it.
  • Did take the family to Cold Stone Creamery for some Ice Cream on Saturday. Wife and I split one.

Friend Doing some Wavesking...

Potty Training Success

Last weekend we started to potty train 3yo. We waited until after vacation to get him started. The weekend was ok, but overall it seemed he did not get it completely. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday were all filled with accidents and timers. This was all amplified by the fact the wife was working really late everyday. Thursday morning it appeared that a little light bulb went off over 3yo's head. All of a sudden he was saying he had to go and then willing to try the big potty. (With some rewards... A few Hot Wheels go a long way) By mid afternoon he was only using the big potties and was willing to say goodbye to the little one. He said "I am a big boy now, that is a baby potty...I use big potties" Wife was going to work late Thursday night so we just focused and focused on the potty. Both boys stayed up really late in an attempt to see mom, but she did not make it home until midnight. By the time 3yo fell asleep he had gone so many time. At night and naps he will have a pull up... for now. When he woke this morning he was completely dry and very excited to show mom he could use the big potty.

All day today he was doing great and never had any issues. He knew when he had to go and went! I am extremely excited!!!

The 5 (Potty Training Edition)
  1. Timing - We sent the timer and focused on having to go. Once he figured out when he had to go he was perfect. Having the timer set made us all remember and get him in a groove.
  2. Rewards - Simple rewards mixed with rewards for major goals worked amazingly for 3yo. His first time going he got a reward, his first time pooping a reward and using the big potties he got a reward. In between when he would go he would get stickers and high fives. A few Hot Wheels cars really made the goals special for 3yo
  3. Patients - I know by Wednesday I was very short on patients and when he pooped his pants 1 minute AFTER being on the potty I lost it. In the end working hard and keeping at it made all the difference.
  4. Persistence - Keeping focused on the task and understanding my son made him slowly understand what needed to be done. He struggled, but being persistent allowed for a greater chance of success.
  5. Understanding - Understanding that this is a difficult thing to do and knowing how my son reacts to rewards, goals and my feelings allowed me to creatively get him enjoying the process rather then dreading it.
Daily Observation: The feeling of freedom my son has being free of diapers is nothing to how I feel about not having to deal with them on him again.

Child's Play: "I Am A Big Boy Now!" Yes you ARE!!!

iNearly had an iHeart Attack about my iPod

Oh why oh why do you torment me so? My little piece of technology only an infant, yet so advanced.

7yo and I both use a 30GB iPod Video I bought last year. I have converted Spanish Homework CD's to be used on it as well as many of our movies. This works great for long car trips as well as having a cool way to listen to his homework. We have also started using it to listen to audio books to add another dimension to his learning and entertainment. The funny thing is we really only have one little CD player in the house other then my PC.

Well yesterday during the syncing of the iPod and PC the PC FROZE!!! With this the iPod froze on the "Do Not Disconnect" screen. I attempted to reset the iPod and nothing happened. At this point I freaked thinking the worst... Did my Hard Drive Crash? Is it locked forever? I went online and found a solution. I let the iPod run completely out of charge and then hooked it to my wall charger. Then after it charged I reset it and all is good.

Technology in my opinion should be able to outlast it's desired usefulness. What I mean by this is that it should last well past the next technological advance. If an iPod were only to last until the next generation of iPod then it would need to be replaced every year. Hopefully this was just an odd event and caused my my PC.

7 Year Old Prepares for School...
Yesterday we brought in our box off supplies to school and met 7yo's new teacher. It is nice to be able to go in early and meet the teacher to make the next years school year that much easier. He has a few friends in the class as well as a bunch of new faces. Being in 2nd grade will be another adjustment for him, but I think he actually looks forward to it. While we were there we stopped and talked with his teacher from last year. She gave the kids some summer reading and homework they could do for a prize. He seemed happy to see her as well as see things have changed for the kids coming to 1st grade this year. Of course 3yo was all over going to 7yo's school and seeing the bigger kids and teachers. His eyes were wide and he enjoyed seeing the 1st grade teacher again.

The 5
  1. iPod - Such a tiny piece of tech... Such a big deal to lose.
  2. School - It will be nice to have the boys back in school. Monday starts 2nd grade and in a couple weeks 3yo Pre-School begins.
  3. More Rain - Last night we got hit again by storms. I had to drain the kids pool a bit yesterday to prevent it from crashing down. 3yo was also up last night for much of the night. I ended up giving up my spot in bed and moving to the couch just to get some sleep. The storms just completely scare him.
  4. No Accidents - Yesterday 3yo made it all day without doing in his underwear. He pooped in the potty twice as well as announce he had to go 3 times and running to the potty to go. We did have two long trips including a dinner play date so a couple of pull ups were needed. He did have some issues with them, but overall did really well.
  5. 23 to 28 Minutes - Today I am bumping up the timer to 28 minutes with hopes 3yo will tell me first he has to go. Progress...Slow and steady...
Daily Observation: When you make a change in your life, your life does not always make it easy.

Health Progress.
  • Day 13 of no Caffeine, Soda or Alcohol.
  • Foods slowing changing
  • New Exercise Added (Complete addition on Monday)
  • Outlook Promising
  • Slow and Steady...

Tiny Vampires and Tiny People

They came out in hordes attacking everyone in sight. The little monsters were after blood, my blood and every kid on the field. 3yo shouted at them and everyone fought them off, but in the end the little bloodsucking mosquitoes were winning. Last night was football practice and the wife was working very late so 3yo came with to practice. We had sprayed bug repellent on at home and 2 times at practice, but the bugs were bad. I figured 3yo would only be there a few minutes and then head home, but the wife was still working so we stayed and played. After the second spraying the attacks seemed a little less. At about 7:15 the shadows were increasing and the bugs came out in swarms. Practice was over at 7:30 and everyone was happy to be done.

Last night the thunder rolled in again shaking the house so 3yo made his way to our room crying and shaking. He squirms so much by 5:00 I got out of bed and slept on the couch. He is sleeping all alone in our queen sized bed right now. Something is wrong with a 3yo have a queen sized bed to himself.

This morning we head out to 7yo's school to drop off his supplies, see his room and meet his 2nd grade teacher. School starts on Monday and just in time.

The 5
  1. Mosquitoes - They are awful little vampires. We need more bats!
  2. Thunder - Thunder and fireworks scare 3yo out of his mind. Hopefully he get over that before next fourth of July...
  3. Working Late - Wife is working late all week for a major project. Nothing like a few extra hours of alone time with the boys...
  4. 23 Minutes - I am living my life at 23 minute intervals. Potty training is going better, but the timer is starting to drive me crazy. Unfortunately 3yo is still having some issues so the timer is a must. There is nothing like having to drop everything every 23 minutes.
  5. Rainy Day People - The past week has been RAIN RAIN RAIN... Keeping us inside and making the mosquitoes go crazy.
Daily Observation: Mosquitoes are just plain EVIL!!!

Day 3 in the Potty Training Trenches...

0830 and the task of conquering the potty has arrived. We began to dig in for what was likely to become trench warfare. Neither side giving an inch, but everything floating in the balance. The first advance would be dislodging the diaper and getting the underpants into position. At every turn it seemed 3yo had forces to out flank us, but in the end the underpants were in position.

Saturday morning we began the journey of potty training the 3yo. We had high hopes it would be a smooth transition like his older brother, but he is a bit too stubborn. Getting him to pee in the potty has not been that difficult since he has done that on and off for a while without pressure. The big key for us is his willingness to commit. That first day he had a few accidents and they continued through today. Over the weekend he did not poop in the potty, but did that once in an accident and once in a nap time pull up. Today we finally had some success. He pooped in the potty, but first thing this morning he had an accident and then later still wet his pants.

We made progress and it looks like after this evening he is actually getting into the whole thing. We have encouraged him as has his brother. Tonight I even went one step further when he was fighting us and used his potty. Now being 6'3" this does present some logistical issues. In the end he thought that was great and stopped the fighting.

So tomorrow is another day of using a timer and getting him excited about no more diapers...

The 5
  1. Accidents - Little kid underwear and mistimed movements are not too pleasant.
  2. Grilled Cheese - Finally convinced 7yo to actually try something again. After a long few days of attitude the hammer fell and he was in trouble. I made the boys Grilled Cheese with sharp cheddar (both love the cheese) and 7yo actually LIKED IT!!
  3. The Sound Of Silence - With the attitude getting worse I decided despite the crummy raining day all television privileges were gone. This made the house very quiet with the rain coming down.
  4. Sleep - Not getting enough with the weather lately. 3yo is afraid of storms. Waking and running into our room.
  5. 10 Days - It has been 10 days since I have had Soda, Caffeine or Alcohol. It has taken some time, but I feel better and have already dropped a few pounds.
Daily Observation - The minute AFTER you try to get a child to use the potty they decide to go...

Child's Play - "I Pooped!" Great next time lets try IN THE POTTY!

Saturday Rain and Pee Wee Gridiron...

The rain came rolling in, the combatants hit the field and the sounds of football were in the air. With stomps and snorts the kids were ready to play. The sounds of football were quickly overcome by the sounds of voices..."Coach..Where do I go again?" Ah Pee Wee football...

My 7 year old in on the local in house Bantam Weight Packers and is just learning the sport. Last week was their first game and was a loss to the Bears. They had the game, but since they were new at it and they had not played as a team a couple mistakes cost them the game. It was a fantastic learning experience for everyone and all 15 played with heart. My son is one of the 4 "Little Guys" and saw very limited action last week. Until the little guys understand how to tackle, block and of course have a little field "AWARENESS" the coaches only play them limited. The little guys played on Kick off and Return in a VERY high scoring game. Practice last week included a scrimmage with another team and the opportunity for the little guys to get some action on the field. 7 yo was put in as a safety and it did not take long for him to get involved. By the 4th play the other team had their biggest ELIGIBLE player run with the ball. (78 lbs is the limit to run with the ball) He broke through the line and bounced of an outside linebacker to run right into 7 yo's tackle... BAM he hit him and pulled the other boy down with a SOLO TACKLE!!! All the kids where extremely excited to see the little guy take down the biggest runner! The rest of the week he practiced at Safety and was starting to understand the position. The only real problem is he is so small he can not see over some of the big guys and loses the ball in the backfield.

Today as we were warming up (I assistant coach) the Defensive coach let him know he would be playing safety and subbing in and out. this was his chance to play on the big D!!! Well the rain came down and the other team could hardly move the ball. They had one play in the first half for a TD when everyone slipped off the runner. After that they were 4 and out and a turnover. 7 yo was in, but the run plays were over before they started. The rain was tough and we ended up winning 18-6...

The 5 (Pee Wee Football Edition)
  1. Coaches - Do a pretty darn good job getting the kids were they need to be. That said no matter how hard they try 6-9 yo's struggle.
  2. Players - Most of the kids are really excited to play. Even when they struggle at first they can see how TEAMWORK and paying attention can make a difference.
  3. Rain - Really difficult to play in the rain with such small hands. The ball is SLIPPERY!!!
  4. Kicking - What a difficult thing for the little kids. We actually have a boy that has a darn good leg and just missed 3 extra points... EXTRA POINTS in PEE WEE!!! By next week with a little practice and a better placement he will be making those!!!
  5. TEAMS - The kids really start to work as a team. Even being so young they begin to realize how important it is to work as a team.
Bonus - Helping Coaching... This has been great for my son as well as me. I have coached soccer before for little kids, but this is an entire new thing. I am really involved not only with my son, but 14 other boys looking to learn to play football. I spent 30 minutes after practice yesterday just punting the ball to a few kids and having a great time.

Daily Observation - Rain and Pee Wee football is difficult... Rain and Pee Wee Cheerleading is really difficult.

Child's Play - "Dad I tackled the really big guy all by myself!" "Yes You DID!!! Good Job!!!"

Happy Birthday 2yo... Now you are 3!

Well at 10:45 this morning my little 2yo officially becomes my little 3yo. It is hard to believe he is three years old already. They say your life changes when you have kids. This is extremely true and even more so when he was born. His birth started my path as an At Home Dad. Before he was even born we had decided to do something to not have him and his brother that just turned four in daycare. The costs financially and mentally of that were just too much. So here we are four years later and I can honestly say our worst day is still better then the best day of daycare.

In a few weeks he starts 3 yo Pre-School two days a week. This year is actually nearly 3 hours and a drop off situation. I will have 2 hours to myself to get my work done for the morning. This will ease our schedules up a bit so we can have more fun in the afternoon.

So Happy Birthday my little man...

These Foods They Are A Changing

Well I have finally stopped making excuses and have hit the ground running in an attempt to get back to a healthy weight. The first major change for me is something that will be extremely difficult... (Today is day number 4)

NO SODA (Coca Cola is a major Vice)
NO ALCOHOL (Beer, Wine, Spirits)
NO CAFFEINE (Tea, Soda)

With the 3 changes above I am also going back to my good habits of High Protein, Green Veggies, Fruit, Dairy and Whole Grains. With those 3 changes above I estimate I will be dropping 2000-2500 calories per week. I am also cutting out all the junk I can. No more cookies, chips, fast food or the like. I will make one exception to my "Junk" intake by getting a SLICE of Pizza from the local Pizza place when I have a HEAVY EXERCISE day. Pizza is my other big VICE and I do not think it would be wise to drop that completely. Maybe once or twice a month get a slice. This way I can only eat the slice which should help prevent me from eating way too much.

Along with my healthier eating I am going to exercise much more. I currently Ride my bike about 3 times a week for at least an hour, but I will also be adding some full body exercises to my daily routines as well as hitting the sidewalks with 3yo a bit more for walks.

I have a few benchmark dates...

December 1st 2007 (Back to Pre-Injury Weight)
February 1st 2008 (Down to First Goal Weight 220)
August 1st 2008 (Having my comfortable weight figured out after Summer Riding Season)

As an adult my lowest weight 3 years ago was 217. This was achieved by bad dieting and little to now exercise. Not a good way to make a goal.

So in order to FORCE my self to account for my habits you will be seeing a little more here and there about my weight and exercise.

Todays Lunch...

Protein Shake Blended with Ice, Grapes, Carrots, Apples, Cheese and Salad Greens.

Mattel is at it again... More Recalls

This is beginning to finally be rather crazy. The newest round of recalls now has hit one of my sons favorite toys. Sarge for Disney/Pixars movie "Cars" I looked it up and followed the info hoping mine was not one on the recall list. Well it is on the list...

Mattel is doing the recall thing, but they should have been watching over the quality control from the beginning. Yes the factory used the tainted materials, but Mattel should have been on top of this a bit sooner. I guess it comes down to don't ask, don't tell.

One of the heads of the company in China committed Suicide the other day. Millions and Millions of these toys are in the market and now they have to try to get them back. I am on top of these things with my kids toys, but what about the millions of people that will not act on the recall.

So as I put Sarge away in a drawer and wait for the prepaid mailer I wonder... What toy is next!

Online Bet with my Blogger Friend

Well a blogger friend at Daddyshack and I have a bet for the upcoming Bears / Cowboys game on Sept 23rd. If (when) the Bears win he will post a Bears logo on his blog for 30 days. If (unlikely) the Cowboys win I will post their logo on my blog.

The online equivalent of wearing an opposing teams t-shirt...

Go Bears!

The 5 Extended Edition

Well since I was gone last week I am a few short on "The 5" so here are a few.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Movie
  1. True to book - It was actually pretty good. Of course there was a bunch of stuff missing, but it worked out pretty well. Wife and I both enjoyed it and it was nice to get out while on vacation
  2. Luna - The Actress the chose for Luna was really close to what I pictured. Good casting
  3. Bellitrix Lastrange - PERFECT CHOICE!!!
  4. Special Effects - They were truly special. The final wizard battle was really cool.
  5. Daloris Umbridge - FANTASTIC casting. The cat plates on the walls in her office we great.
Vacation
  1. North Woods - Quiet, comfortable and PEACEFUL
  2. Cabin Beds - Not so comfortable
  3. Lake - BEAUTIFUL!!!
  4. People -Friendly and nice
  5. Black Bear - COOL!
Things I am going without (Help with weight and better health)
  1. Soda/Pop - No more Coca Cola for me. I have officially as of this past Saturday removed that from my menu.
  2. Caffeine - No More Soda, Regular Tea... Help improve my health
  3. Beer - Yes Beer... No more 312 for a long while.
  4. Rum And Coke - No More Coke...No More Alcohol.
  5. Sweats - Bye Joe Joe's, Hersey and of course Milk Shake
General Children Moments on Vacation
  1. Sleep - Really difficult, 3yo was having major issues with not being at home
  2. Swimming at the beach - The number one favorite activity! Who needs a water park, theme park or crazy ride. A Dock at the beach was the perfect entertainment.
  3. Hiking in the Woods - Little legs get rather tired walking up and down forest paths.
  4. Sponge Bob Saves the Day - It was nice that the cabin had DirecTv. When the boys were winding down they were able to watch cartoons. I also brought my XBOX and a bunch of movies just in case. At the end of the day sometimes they just need a little SpongeBob..
  5. I want to Go Home - By about the fourth day 3yo was chanting regularly "I Want To Go Home"
General Observations...
  • People in the North Woods move a little slower and Nicer.
  • People here can not read those big red signs. S-T-O-P is a puzzle to most

The Family Vacation

When planning a vacation with two boys ages 7 and 3 it can be rather difficult. The things 7 year old wants to do are typically out of reach of the 3 year old. The things the 3 year can do would be a little boring for the 7 year old. We had looked at many different options, but in the end we thought a nice relaxing vacation at a cabin would be fun for all. We did some research and found a few places we liked. After a little while it became clear it is difficult to find an opening. One of the locations we looked at had an opening due to a cancellation and we took it. The cabin is on Pickerel Lake in Northern Wisconsin at The Whispering Pines Lodge. The vacation was for a week and we left Saturday and Returned Friday Afternoon. We would have stayed the final night, but 7 year old had a football game and needed to be back for that. In the end it worked out well since 3yo was getting a little homesick and had been asking to go home for a couple days.

Saturday.

The Drive up was pleasant nonstop is less then 5 and a half hours. Packing the van took a little longer then I had planned and we left a little later then expected, but still before lunch. Just past the half way point is Stevens Point WI and would be the perfect place to stop for multiple reasons. The boys needed to get out and there is a really nice bike shop in town. The Hostel Shoppe is a GIANT bike store with some amazing bikes. I really would like to get a recumbent bike and have been doing tons of research. When the time comes to actually get one it is not cheap. I am a couple years from buying one, but I what to have as much info now to make sure I make the right purchase. While there I set up and took one of the recumbents I am looking at for a ride. All I can say is WOW! I rode the RANS Stratus XP and it was rather amazing. While I rode the bike the boys ran around some grassy areas around the shop chasing grasshoppers. Once we made it to the lodge we were greeted by very friendly people and amazing lake views. The sun was shinning and a light wind was blowing in the trees. Both boys wanted to swim so we got them changed and headed for the beach. After a little swimming and unpacking we were ready to relax.

Sunday

My parents came up for part of the week so the boys were really excited to see Grandma and Grandpa. Off course the boys were the center of all attention and this also gave the wife and I some much needed rest during the week. We used the boats, swam at the beach and had a blast playing around.

Monday

Bike Ride and Flea Market. We spent the morning around the lake with Grandpa taking 7yo out in a paddle boat for a while and Grandma played in the sand with 3yo. My dad and I took 7yo for a bike ride on some of the nicest trails I have ridden on. We hooked up the trailer bike for 7yo and rode for about 6 miles. While we were out riding the Wife, 3yo and my mom were hanging out at the local Flea Market. Monday night my folks hit the local Indian Casino in Lake of the Torches.

Tuesday

Again we spent some serious time playing at the lake and using the boats. We then went for a drive to the "Rainbow Floage" to look around. The boys had a blast exploring the beaches, trying to skip rocks with Grandpa and finally looking at the Crayfish Daddy caught in the shallows. After dinner my parents watched the boys while we went to Minoqua WI and watched Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. We got to enjoy a little time out while my folks enjoyed time with the boys.

Wednesday

My parents were leaving in the morning so we planned on going north into Upper Michigan with the boys. After saying our goodbyes we packed into the van and headed toward Lake Superior. On our way we stopped by the Black River and saw some amazing waterfalls and wilderness. We arrived at a park on Lake Superior and walked toward the break walls. Once on top 3yo looked out and shouted "OH MY GOSH!" to the amusement of an older couple looking at the lake. We made our way down the rocks to the beach and the boys played in the lake while being completely amazed at the size. After a while we decided to head on down the road to a "ROCK BEACH" and see what is there. On our way to the beach I noticed in the distance as we drove a very large black thing appear at the road ahead. It then moved and stopped in the road. It was a BLACK BEAR! We were not close enough to get the full scope of its size, but it was amazing to see. We had hoped to see it when we got closer, but it disappeared into the woods by the time were were close enough in the van. Even without a picture it was a treat for us to see a Bear in the wild. Once at the rock beach we realized we had the wrong shoes with us. I forgot the rubber shoes and sandals. 7yo had no issues with the smooth rocks, but I was sinking too deeply which hurt a bit. I decided to put my leather sandals back on and walk in with 7yo. By the time we made it back to the cabin the boys were extremely tired.

Thursday

We spent the morning at the lake and I had plans to spend the late morning and afternoon on the bike trails. Well the ride did not go as planned and I ended up walking in the rain for about 5 miles after two flat tires. You can read my entire account at wonkemtel. The rain made the afternoon a bit tough so the boys were in for a while. After some more time out and about we made plans to leave on Friday.

Friday

The original plan was to leave around bedtime to drive while the kids slept, but I was having issues staying awake that late do to 3yo's issues with sleeping in a strange place. After thinking about it we decided to leave after lunch when 3yo would want to nap. This worked out very well and after a morning at the beach and on the lake with boats we were all ready to leave. The drive was a little tough at times with 3yo wanting to be home and as we would find out Saturday becoming a bit sick. When we made it home the kids were excited to be back and the dogs were excited to see us.

Overall the vacation was a blast and we enjoyed not having to do anything at any given time. We learned a lot and have already made plans to return next year. This time we will know a few more things and probably be able to have even more fun. The only draw back was 3yo's issues with going to bed. He slept bad which in turn made it difficult on all of use. The weather was perfect and the location amazing.

Back From The North Woods...

Well we made it back from a week in the North Woods of Wisconsin. The trip was a blast and we have booked the cabin for next year as well. It was truly nice to not HAVE to do anything.

Well tomorrow I will be posting a super long post about the entire trip from 6 hours in the car with a 3 and 7 year old to seeing a Black Bear in the U.P. on our way to lake Superior.

I also have some cool pictures and video, but was unable to get the Bear. Slide shows, Stories and Rants Oh My...

Be Well...

A Song That Must Be Shared..."Pachelbel Bedtime"

This song was shared with me and I must share it with everyone. The song is very creative and of course amazingly true...

Enjoy...

The Lingering Effect of No Sleep and No Time.

"Bright and Early For the Daily Races, Going Nowhere, Going Nowhere."
-Mad World Tears for Fears.

This is how my week has been and it seems to be taking its toll on my sanity. Every morning we get up and go to swimming which for 7yo is a blast, but for 2yo is complete and unbelievable torture, at least in his eyes. I have been participating in the class which is truly supposed to be a little more independent. He has improved from 90% screaming to about 50%, which is still unnerving. The classes are not at the same time so instead of spending an hours with the lessons and travel it is closer to two hours. By the time we get home and showered the morning is gone. Normally this would be a non issue, but with planning for our trip and the start of 7yo's football it is a bit tough to get things done. Not to mention the many errands for the trip and other weekly odds and ends. We need to leave for football around 5:30 and we do not get back until around 8:20 so most of the evening is gone. I have been working hard to get all my work done as well which leaves the sleep thing in short supply. Up Early, Up Late and still time is not on my side. I guess I can get some rest next week on vacation. I will be able to rest easy knowing friends will be house sitting and taking care of the "Furry Kids."

The 5
  1. Youth Football - 7yo was a bit overwhelmed the first night, but coming to night number 3 he seems rather excited. He has a lot to learn and can be rather stubborn.
  2. Swim Lessons - For the 2yo I completely dread them. I remain very calm, but having him so upset is extremely difficult.
  3. Trip Planning - Trying to get everything set for our trip with the crazy week males it really difficult.
  4. The Unnamed Difficulty - There has also been another thing going on that is being left out of the discussions. In due time it will all be revealed, but for now it is just added stress.
  5. Sound of Silence - I am hoping the vacation will bring some moments of peace and quiet. With my parents coming I am sure there will be so added time to relax.
Daily Observation: No matter how much time you think you have you need to cut that down by 50% per child.
